I’m not gonna lie: When news of this
cover arrived last Friday by way of Vogue’s e-mailed newsletter, I threw this
couple some major shade (i.e. there was a lot of eye-rolling on my part,
compounded by a long, drawn-out Oh,
puh-leez for extra dramatic effect.)
I’m not in Vogue Queen/Editor-in-Chief
Anna Wintour’s inner circle or anything, but it was pretty much an open secret
that there was a time when she preferred to have been photographed in Prada
from three seasons past than place Kim Kardashian on the cover of Vogue.
But, I guess Mama Bear Kris Jenner
finally succeeded in twisting Anna’s arm (if the two were to throw down in a
dark alley, my money is totally on Kris); or perhaps the rumors are true that
Kanye confronted Anna with a Come to Jesus plea as to why both he and Kim
rightfully deserve the holy grail that is the cover of Vogue.
Will we ever know what possessed Anna to
cave and throw in the towel? Probably not.
Despite my major hateration, I still
clicked on the link in the newsletter that read Click here for the video of Kim, Kanye, and Baby North on set of the
photo shoot with [photographer phenom] Annie Leibovitz .
So let’s start with the obvious: Baby
North is gorgeous, and the photos of her parents look like art. But then, Leibovitz is arguably the best in the biz.
She could photograph a wine-o passed out on a street corner and it would look
like, well…art.
Because
that’s what Annie Leibovitz does.
But I’m
still scratching my head with regard to what qualifies these two – more specifically
Kim – to land on this cover. I don’t mean to be a fashion purist here, but I’ve
been a Vogue subscriber since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, and I quite
liked the days when it was a given that Elle, Naomi, Stephanie, Linda – you
know, models of that ilk – would grace a cover.
But, alas, it
is a new day, one when actresses have snatched those coveted cover gigs and
reality stars are even nipping at the heels of bona fide actresses. (I do
admit, however, that I am inconsistent in my belief that a Vogue cover is only
for cat walkers because I was fine with Sarah Jessica Parker, Lena Dunham, and
Beyoncé gracing the cover; in fact, I was downright happy for them.)
Let me just
come out and admit my bias right now: Khloe is my favorite Kardashian sister. I
really, truly like Khloe. Like, would-like-to-have-coffee-with-her kind of
like. But I’m not sure I want to see her on the cover of Vogue. Kanye, love him
or hate him, I think is pretty good at what he does when he’s not acting
like a complete fool and insulting people at award shows, but I’m not sure
even he should be staring back at me from the cover of Vogue.
It’s Kim
that leaves me scratching my head. Yeah, she’s pretty. But what does she do? Even
on her reality show, she’s got the personality of a napkin. Let’s face it: Kim
is known for her big butt and vocal fry. (JLo was
known for her butt, too, yes; but at least she sings, dances, and acts.)
Why is Kim famous?
Well, we
all know technically why she’s famous, and, frankly, therein lies my
fascination with her. Although I don’t admire it – quite the contrary, I find
it profoundly stupefying how her mother, Kris, can make a dollar out of 15
cents. How she can spin gold from a sex tape…which eventually led to the cover
of Vogue. And I’m guessing that Anna is willing to bet that this type of fascination
will translate into magazine sales because that’s the whole point of this,
right?
What do you
think of this cover? Tell me – even if you are Team “Kimye.”

Good morning :)
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what all the hype about this cover was, so I read. Got it. Neither should be on the cover. It is VOGUE! Catwalkers, this is where they belong. THat all said, again you hit the nail on the head. I am a SECRET Bravo TV holic, and am amazed as to why they have a TV show. My 16 y/o when she catches me watching it, is always asking "Why do they have a show, what do they do?" No clue, I just love watching a good train wreck.... It is mindless TV, while I work. THanks for the insight.... Have a Great day!
Hi, Ray!
DeleteThis is yet another thing we have in common...
I get razzed by The Hubs every time he enters the room and I'm watching The Kardashians -- which isn't often, by the way. It's not like I even keep up with the story lines or know what's going on. It is simply "on" while I'm, say, unloading the dishwasher or ironing clothes. Like I said, I do like Khloe, so I semi-pay attention to her, and I do like Kris Jenner's taste in home decor, so I like to check out their digs...but other than that? Me don't care. I actually give an involuntary,"Ugh" whenever Kim comes into view.
Mindless TV, as you put it. That is all this is...so, basically Kim lands Vogue for being associated with mindless TV. Hell, infomercials are also mindless TV, but I don't see the person shilling blenders on the cover of Vogue. Sigh. I'm done ranting.
I'll stop by your blog tonight after I put the kiddies in bed. You have a good day, too, and thank you for commenting. :-)
Not into it. But I don't have strong feelings one way or another, to be honest. I don't really watch a lot of reality tv, but I did love a good Kardashian (whether the original or the miami installment) marathon when I would run at the gym. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I gotta give it to you, Sara: A K marathon is just the thing to distract while doing a work-out. I agree with you there...
DeleteThank you for commenting. :-)
I don't care for either one of them. When I seen the cover I just rolled my eyes and kept it moving.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch the show and I don't really listen to Kanye's music anymore because he turned strange after his mother died.
Yeah, you are right...I never truly looked at it that way, but there was indeed a change in his music after the passing of his mother (which, despite how I feel about him, I am indeed sorry about; that must have really sucked...)
DeleteThat said, I am in lock-step with you about the eye-rolling.
Thank you for commenting!
I'm not a vogue subscriber and don't really know the back story behind all of this and I don't keep up with the K's or Yeezy's LOL. Like you said, what does Kim do to deserve this cover? We all know how she got famous. I'd like to say Kris was behind this and Kim got lucky.
ReplyDelete"She got lucky."
DeleteWord.
Thank you for commenting, Angela! :-)
I have such mixed feelings about this post and don't even want to comment but like the rest of the world, we can't stay away from the Kardashians. Actually, I have to admit that I have done a fantastic job staying away. I have yet to ever lay eyes on their ridiculously named child and hope to keep it that way. Neither one of them deserve to grace the cover of Vogue. Style magazines should be left to those with style.
ReplyDeleteI like you, Super Fresh. I do. Thank you for stopping by and commenting...
Delete"ridiculously named child and hope to keep it that way." -- this had me cracking up so hard, The Hubs actually asked me what I was reading! lol
How do I feel about Kimye? Pretty much nauseated. :P
ReplyDeleteSee, Lexa? The mark of a true, talented writer such as yourself: The ability to cut to the chase and make such an effective statement in as few words as possible.
Delete(Plus, as much as I agree with you, I'm quite surprised that the word "nauseated" didn't make an appearance in this blog post. :-/
Thank you -- as always -- for commenting!
I love Kanye, I realize he has moments where he expresses himself poorly but none the less what he says can at times make plenty of sense. Kim decided to use what others thought would ruin her and make some money. She decided to take control of her mishap and run with it so for that I give her credit. The Vogue crew caved in to pressures and decided to let the money game win so in the end business is business, for that again I show respect. I appreciate hustle and being about your money so I am not going to hate. That being said....it would not have been my choice to put Kim on the cover. Courtney great post :)
ReplyDeletePreach, Mari. I agree with all of your points here. VERY well said...
DeleteI can't knock a hustle, either. You've made me realize that I need to clarify something: I guess I am not a "hater" in the traditional sense because using "hateration," implies that I am jealous or resentful when, hand-to-heart, I'm not.
I don't hate the player, I guess I actually hate the game: I can't knock Kim for using what (VERY, VERY little) she's got...
I just don't think Anna should have caved.
Thank you so much for commenting!
I am soooo with you on all of this. Kloe is my fav. too. I soooo remember my Vogue obsessed days with Naomi, Linda E., Christy Turlington, Cindy of course...my favorite from back in the day was Helena Christensen or Nadej. Anyway, Kanye is just annoying in all ways to me and although Kim has a beautiful face, she is not interesting to me. They might have been able to do a cool shot of just her and get super artsy with it, but even then, I am 5 ft. 2 and 130 lbs -- I don't need to see my stubby own self on the cover of vogue. I want my models!!
ReplyDeleteI. Am. With. You. Susan.
DeleteIsn't that why we pick up a copy of Vogue, in part? To ogle the genetic freaks with mile-long legs, flat stomachs, and ungodly perfect bone structure???? They don't intimidate me, I know I don't look like that, and guess what? I'm okay with it! But I like my coffee with cream, my afternoons with Wendy, and my Vogue with supermodels.
I don't like when my likes are fucked with.
That said, I was over the moon when Lena Dunham made her Vogue appearance, and she is NOT a supermodel. But I admire her. She is ABOUT SOMETHING. Her accomplishments -- good ones -- landed her Vogue. Not her Mama's money or boyfriend's arm-twisting.
Okay, climbing down off my soap box now...
And you're not stubby. Okay, I'm done for real now, and thank you for commenting.
DeleteHonestly I'm so sick of the both of them. She's famous for the sake of being famous and he is such an arrogant prick that I don't even care how talented he is. I'm not a vogue reader but if I were I would not even open the magazine.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from sits.
I'm with you; hell, I've already said my peace about Kim, and I am getting more and more irritated with Kanye's rants about his own "fabulousness." Ugh, just go sit down somewhere...
DeleteThanks for commenting, my SITSta!
Oh I wish peeps would stop paying attention to them so they would just go away! I miss the days when models were on covers.
ReplyDeleteDo you think the models will ever return? Sigh. I'm so desperate for their return that I'd take a Vogue cover featuring a 90-year-old and wrinkled Naomi, Cindy, Helena, and Linda over this. What's Vogue coming too???? (Insert me speaking in a whiny voice here.)
DeleteOh Courtney, I would love it if they put older models on covers and stop airbrushing everyone!! This is why so many people have screwed up versions in their head as to what a normal person looks like. Let's celebrate our flaws!
DeleteAGREED! And, really, what with the hand that these supermodels have been dealt gene-wise -- and the fact that they have access to the very best beauty products on the planet -- there would be no need to airbrush anyhow.
DeleteI'm just tired of hearing about them. I wish the family would go away but it doesn't seem like that'll happen.
ReplyDeleteI know, I know. I thought about that before I decided to post this..."Am I contributing to the machine by featuring this foolishness?" I ultimately decided to go for it because I was just that irritated about it...But here's the thing: I'm NOT buying this magazine (I'm already a subscriber), I'm NOT supporting their line at Sears, and I'm NOT supporting their line of baby clothes at Babies R Us.
DeleteBasically, if the K's are shilling it, then I'm not buying.
I long for the day when this negative attention outweighs the amount of money rolling in.
Thank you so much for commenting!
I feel like Vogue should be a mark of distinction for the super-talented or influential in the world of fashion and entertainment. Kim is reality-TV famous, not "talented" or "influential" famous, and Kanye doesn't seem like the right fit either. Ugh.
ReplyDelete"...mark of distinction for the super-talented or influential in the world of fashion and entertainment."
DeleteYes, yes, YES, Martha! If not supermodels, then people of the aforementioned ilk
I mean, does Kim hold a candle to bona fide musicians, first ladies, and Olympians?
Not even close.
Thank you so very much for commenting. :-)
I'm not a fan of either one of them, but they do have a large fan base. I think this cover will sell well with people who don't normally read Vouge. I don't plan on buying this issue, but I might check it out from the library.
ReplyDeleteYeah, another good point. Large fan base = $.
DeleteI will admit to being curious as to what the sales figures shake out to be when it's all said and done...
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. :-)
