The Video Diaries: NFL's Hall of Fame Dinner

While Scott and I recently attended one of his NFL Alumni meetings together (please click here to see why it was hilariously funny), it has been way too long since he and I had a bona fide Mommy and Daddy night out. But I am pleased to tell you that the time has finally come: Tonight Scott and I are headed to Ford Field – where the Detroit Lions play – to attend the Gridiron Greats of Michigan's Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Dinner.

You’ve heard the phrase It takes a village? Well, it’s going to take a village of spandex to get me into my dress tonight. Yeah, I’ve been keeping with my morning smoothies, watching my portion seizes as well as diligently taking the kids on fast-paced afternoon walks, but I’m still depending on a hope, a prayer, a brand new girdle, and Spanx to pull my ensemble together.

Here, in my first ever The Brown Girl with Long Hair Video Diary, I’m breaking down tonight's look – as well as what will be underneath...

  1. Ooooo Courtney! I love this video! Your are beautiful and your hair is gorgeous! I heart those shoes! I would not be able to walk in them! I will say a prayer for you that you don't fall! What a fantastic cause that dinner is and holy crap that poor guy was paralyzed on the field! Those guys bodies get so beat up and as you very well know those injuries stay with them the rest of their lives. Looking forward to see you all put together! Have a fantabulous time!

    1. Oh, thank you, Susie! Yeah, the shoes are kind of like...BAM! lol But I swear that they are a nice, colorful edition to what some might deem your basic LBD (Little Black Dress)...

In more important news, the rain has stopped and the sun is shining today, so my blowout should be safe! That's even more important than the shoes, if you ask me...lol

      Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks so much, Idalmis! I hope I don't disappoint!

I am just so excited to finally get done up and leave my Havaiana flip flops and flannel PJ pants -- and the kids! -- at home for a change...I'm nearly giddy over here!

Thank you so much for commenting. :-)

  3. I love the video! I have been asked to do more of those too...just don't have the time!

I use the spanx all in one that goes right up to under your bra. Miracle product! Have fun!

    1. Hey, Kristen! And TGIF! (Thanks, also, for the #FF shout-out..)

Ah, yes, so I decided to put my mug in front of the camera. I'm surprised I hadn't actually thought of it sooner, being a former TV reporter (CBS WLTX-TV in South Carolina). It's strange. I LOVE public speaking, but once I left broadcast news I kind of took that hat off, per se. Scott suggested I should do a video about tonight a few days ago, and...voila!

And with regard to the power of Spanx...yeah, once I put that 10-yo-girl-leotard-thingy on AND my corset, AND my tight, tight panties, well, I should be cinched within an inch of my life! (Wait. That sounds hella uncomfortable. lol)

      Thank you for commenting. :-)

  4. Hey Courtney Hey LOL it's so cool to hear your voice! You're just gorgeous girl...I know you all are going to have a great time and it's a good cause...so you never wear your hair curly? Just wondering :) Have a great time looking forward to seeing the pictures.

    1. Hi, Takei! Thanks so much -- I do appreciate your nice words. So, I have no idea why I am not in the bed because my arse is going to be dog-tired tomorrow from this dinner. We just arrived home not too long ago, and I just put both kids to bed...

I cannot WAIT to share everything with you guys!!! We had a BLAST!

About me wearing my hair curly? Um...like, NEVER. I actually wore it curly/wavy all through college. (And, get this, I actually auditioned for BET's Teen Summit out at BET headquarters in DC, right after Ananda left. I wasn't chosen, of course. I was told that they wanted a completely different look...

If you visit the About the Girl page, you'll see an engagement pic of Scott and me, and my hair is wavy/curly there -- not 100% curly, as I just braided my hair and soaked the braids in water to get that look...

Thank you, as always, for commenting. :-)

  5. Loved it! I can't wait to see your full look and hear your recap. I love the VLOG idea too. I love bright shoes with a neutral dress and those undergarments will suction you in for sure, though you don't look like you need it one bit, but it can never hurt!! I would be afraid one might bust a seem on me and fly off and hit someone with some sort of crazy velocity - ha! Have a great time!

  6. Susan, all I can say it this: Great minds think alike because, I swear -- no joke -- as I was holding my breath and sucking everything in with all my might, I had a vision that a pin or two just might snap off and fly clear across Ford Field.

Right then I made a mental note to pack a heavy-duty safety pin in my clutch. You know, Just in case.

Turns out, I never needed the pin, thank God, because everything stayed put, which is a damn good thing because: I forgot to put the freakin' pin in my purse!

But, man, did we have an awesome time. It's midnight as I type this, and I just put the kids to bed, which is where I'm headed myself...

    1. Thanks, Angela! But, 'eh, there are still some kinks I have to work out with regard to quality. (I was actually filming in front of a large window because I love natural light, but I think I slanted the blinds too much...)

Needless to say, I really enjoy it because I've spent so many years as a TV broadcaster -- only now I get to talk about things I *want* to talk about!

Thank you for commenting this morning.

    1. Thank you so much, Sara! We had SUCH a blast, which, let me tell you, was long overdue what with having a 7 month-old and 2.5 year-old...

I hope my follow-up post doesn't disappoint! I'm so excited to post it...

  9. I remember saying many moons ago, the day I had to wear Spanx would be the day I kill myself. I should have been on suicide watch for the past 2-3 years then. lol. But you rock. There is no shame in it. Every woman needs a little help and support. I am sure you are going to look amazzzzing. That fund sounds like a great thing and so happy that the brotherhood keeps supporting each other. Have fun - can't wait to hear all about it.

    1. I am right there with you. I remember once upon a time, I only wore a thong and strapless bra under an evening gown.

      Not anymore! lol

Oh well, although I wholeheartedly admit to putting considerably more effort into my undergarments, I'm proud of what I look like! #OwningIt

    1. Good Morning, Louida...and Happy Sunday! Drat! That's a shame about your not seeing the video...you're the only person who has said that to me -- and I've tried it here on multiple computers at different time, and they've all worked. (Just curious, are you using Google Chrome or IE? And do you have Windows 8 or an older system?

Thanks for commenting, Louida, I'm looking froward to sharing the photos/stories of this evening with you!!! :-)

    2. I use Windows 8 and tried it on IE and Firefox and it didn't work.

  11. Okay. First of all, I loved seeing you on video and hearing your voice (in a non-creepy way!) I love you!

    Those shoes.....smokin!

Second of all, seriously this couldn't have come at a better time. I need your help! I spent 2 hours at Macy's trying to buy shape wear. I got SO PISSED and hot and sweaty that I just stormed out of there. I called my boyfriend yelling "I'M JUST GONNA EMBRACE MY CURVES AND DO SIT UPS BECAUSE I EITHER LOOK PREGNANT OR CAN'T BREATH IN SHAPE WEAR".

Everything I tried on did just that, either pushed all my fat up or gave me a nice round solid stomach where I legit looked 5 months pregnant. PLEASE send me links to anything you suggest would work for the pouch area.

I am waiting on pins and needles for your reveal post!

    1. Oh, Dina, I'm so sorry about your experience, I truly am. Few things frustrate me like a shopping experience gone awry.

Honestly? It is sheer luck, the help of the good Lord above, or both that my eBay experience didn't end up the exact same way...and had it, I do not know what I have done.

That said, you have never looked pregnant in ANY of your GORGEOUS fashion photos. Want to see what five months pregnant looks like? I've got proof, and trust me: You in no way look like that!

I am e-mailing you the links to what I bought off eBay now...
