Jewelry with Soul “Mommy & Me” Giveaway

I am excited – SO very excited! – for this giveaway because few things are more fun than collaborating with a good friend in an effort to bring joy to a mother and her baby.

On tap for this giveaway is a 100% pure amber teething necklace for baby as well as a $50 gift card for mom to shop at the Etsy store Jewelry with Soul by jewelry designer Sanita Maxwell. I’d like to take a moment to tell you how this giveaway came to be…

Sanita and I met last summer at our son’s open play class and found – quite instantly – that we had something rather special in common: We were both five months pregnant with our daughters, and our due dates were mere days apart. In the meantime, Sanita has become what I like to call my “Mommy BFF.” Here we at our son’s playgroup this past spring with our daughters, Kennedy and Amelia, in tow:

And here’s a close-up of our daughters – and Kennedy is wearing the amber necklace that Sanita made for her:

One last photo of our munchkins – I promise: Here are our children at our community’s water park just last week. And the amber ankle bracelet Kennedy is wearing actually came with the necklace I bought for Scotty when he was an infant:

As if our pregnancies weren’t enough to forge a friendship over, wait, there’s more: While our sons chased each other on the playground last summer, Sanita noticed that Scotty was wearing an amber necklace. Some background:  Scotty’s adventures in teething were pure hell for us all. So when he was just four months old, I began researching holistic teething remedies and found that necklaces made of pure amber actually contain anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties that can reduce teething discomfort. To be clear, amber necklaces are not meant for chewing. When worn on the skin, the amber beads release healing oils that are said to calm babies. (Sidebar: I do believe in this necklace’s effectiveness, and while Scotty is no longer teething, he still wears his necklace today.) Sanita then explained that she designs jewelry – including teething necklaces made from the amber she has collected herself from the shores of her Latvian hometown of Liepaja. (Amber is also found in Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Russia.) Here is Sanita's professional biography, in her own words:

“I make bead embroidery and bead-woven pieces the most but sometimes like to do something different as well. Detailed and eye catching minimalism and "less is more" aesthetics is the goal of my work. Beading is my passion, meditation, addiction, obsession, everything. All my life I have been creative with arts and poetry, silk painting, knitting and now beading, I studied arts in college as well. I was born in Latvia and many years lived in a very inspiring town called Liepaja right by the Baltic Sea where you can find raw amber chunks on the shore and seagulls and crows would greet you every morning.”

Here is a loose pile of amber that Sanita collected herself:

But Sanita doesn’t just create with amber. Here are some additional handmade pieces from her collection:

The winner of this giveaway will receive one 100% pure amber teething necklace for baby. This necklace is safety-knotted so that, should it break – and the string is pretty strong to begin with, but just as a precaution – only one bead would be let loose and the remaining beads will stay intact. The winner will also receive one $50 gift card to shop at Sanita’s Etsy store, Jewelry with Soul. And one more thing: This giveaway is open to all readers of The Brown Girl with Long Hair blog – those who live here in the US and abroad! This giveaway will run until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 14. Good luck, and thank you for participating!

    1. Thank you so very much! I'm telling you, Ida, K's amber necklace has not been removed since I first put it on her. Like Scotty, she bathes in hers, sleeps in it -- everything. I think they've come to love their necklaces as much as I do!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. And enjoy your week!

    1. Thank you, Louida! Yes, those are indeed amber necklaces you've been spying on S and K. They don't leave home...take a bath...or go to be, etc. without them!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Oh man, I don't wear a lot of jewelry these days, but that cuff bracelet would make me reconsider... or at least angle really hard for a date night (rare, these days) where I could wear it!!! Gorgeous!

    1. Hey, there! It's funny you mentioned the cuff because my mom is actually eyeing another one of Sanita's cuffs (it's currently for sale on her Etsy site) as I type this...

I'll be sure that Sanita sees your comment; thank you so much!

    1. Hi, Sony! I truly do swear by these, and like I mentioned in the post above, my nearly-three-years-old son STILL wears his-- it's kind of like a wearable blankie, something that provides familiarity and comfort...

      Thank you for commenting.
