ABOUT

I’m Courtney. I’m a wife, mom of two, certified yoga teacher, and freelance writer.

I’ve been teaching yoga at a variety of locales (studios, corporate offices, Ford Field, etc.) since 2012 and writing professionally since 2009.

I’m a former columnist and cover story writer for The Wayne Dispatch and current frequent contributor to the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series.

My stories have appeared in 16 CSFTS editions, and you can find a list of them here. I’ve also written and published an e-book—a memoir—which chronicles how I went from loathing my natural curls to loving them. It’s sold on Amazon, and you can find it here.

I’m from Michigan—born-and-bred—and a graduate of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (Go, Blue!), but my passion for the written and spoken word has taken me across the country…and back again.

First, to South Carolina to produce and report television news for a CBS affiliate (WLTX-TV) in Columbia, then zig-zagging from coast to coast as an auto show model for Honda and Jaguar, and, finally, back to my hometown (Westland, Michigan) to serve as Deputy Mayor from 2007 until 2009.

That same year (2007), I married my husband, Scott, a Jersey boy and offensive lineman who was led to Michigan by way of the NFL: After graduating from Purdue University in Indiana, he was drafted to the Detroit Lions in the sixth round of the 1991 NFL draft.

After playing for the Lions—and blocking for renowned running back Barry Sanders—for six seasons, he wrote a children’s book, which he self-published.

When I was in South Carolina, I, too, had written a children’s book. But mine ended up collecting dust under my bed.

One afternoon in 2004, I had a chance encounter with a book publisher—who happened to be Scott’s. I later visited her office and tried to sell her on my book.

Upon learning I was single, she tried to sell me on Scott.

I never did publish that children’s book…but I found my husband.

Now, we’re the proud, grateful, and sometimes frustrated parents of two children, a son and a daughter.

I write about things that bring me joy, things I seek clarity about, and, occasionally, I will also write about things that tick me off.

Because, balance.

My hope is that you feel welcome here, find some inspiration, and if you laugh, too, well, that's a bonus.

Thank you for spending some time here.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words, Louida. It's nice to hear that. Trust me, the people I'm around all day -- Scotty and Kennedy -- could care less about what I've accomplished. To them, I'm just a playmate and a milk maid.

I'm really really happy for you. Also my husband's gonna be psyched that your husband played in the NFL. And GO BRONCOS!

    1. Hi, Trininista, and welcome! Thank you for the compliment. No need to pity me about the calamari-- I have no problem at all passing on it. You can have it all to yourself! I'll be just fine with my shrimp cocktail and Oysters Rockefeller. ;-)

      Thank you for commenting.

  15. Holy Crap.....we are neighbors.....sorta!!! I live in Windsor, Canada! And my husband is a HUGE Detroit's Lions fan!! As I am typing this, he is wearing his Detroit Lions Tee. My son has a bunch of t-shirts with the phrase "Future Lions Quater back" printed across! Too Funny....and a small freaking world! :)

    1. Yes, we are! OMG. What a small world! You're just right over the river! When I was a child, we used to watch Detroit's big firework's display at one of those Windsor high-rises (where one of my dad's clients lived) that was (and still is, of course) right on the water...

Tell me, as a Canadian, do you say "Aye"? I LOVE when I hear Canadians say that!!

And I'm always glad to hear from a fellow Lions fan. Don't even get me started on the amount of Lions gear we've got in this house!

      Thanks, Shauna!

That reminds me. I need to book my pedi...

      So glad you commented. :-)

    2. Yeah, I say Eh all the time......I can't even help it really!! lol!!

I can only imagine all the Lions gear you guys have!!

My grandma lives in one of the high rises on the water......it really is the best place to watch those fireworks!!

    3. Good Morning! OKay, I'll make this quick because we could go back and forth all day! lol

I have one more Canadian question for you, and I'm particularly interested in your reply because I have a hunch that you are a bit younger than me: Did you ever watch DeGrassi High? LOVED that show!!!! I used to watch it everyday after school on the Canadian channel (CBC, I think)! I can still remember all the characters and the theme song...

  16. OMG I went to Michigan too! Small world! I graduated in 2003 (well, ugh, that just sounds like freaking forever ago...). Any chance we were there at the same time?? I was an English major. Still pumped to be in Clash of the Couples with you! ~Julia

    1. Hey, Julia! Um, excuse me, but 2003 is "Freaking forever ago"? lol

Way to make a gal feel old.

Try 1999...which was the year I graduated. (My freshman year began in fall '95). I majored in Communications; co-hosted the news and an evening show on WCBN 88.3 Radio...)

No, but seriously, thank you for your comment, and I'm glad that "Clash" brought us together in print, my fellow Wolverine. ;-)

Anyhoo, FYI, I was totally kidding about the "way to make a gal feel old" part: I'm not one to hide or play bashful about my age. I'm 37 and proud of it!
